And it is normal to have salary mismatches so you should not panic and calmly respond. You should give an online response in 17 simple steps.

Did you match your salary figures?

If you have ever reviewed or filed your tax return on your own, then did you notice "Taxable salary" row item on your tax return?

You should always match the figure in this row on your return with the value given in 26AS.

The values should generally match.

And if you notice any difference between them, then you should certainly either try to match them or calculate the reason for the difference.

Tax officers unfailingly issue a notice to explain the reason for the difference.

And you should positively respond it. And this is responded online.

Here is the way to respond it:

1. Go to www.incometaxindiaefiling.gov.in

2. Log in to your income tax e-filing account.

3. Look for an e-proceeding tab in the top navigation bar.

4. Click on it:“Adjustment u/s 143(1)(a)”. That will take you to the following screen:

5. You should see a screen like this

6. Click on Submit, the following screen will be displayed

If you disagree with the notice then select “Disagree”

We have to provide reasons for difference between the salary amounts as per Form 26AS and that disclosed in the income tax return. Usually the difference will arise only because of exemptions claimed under section 10 and medical expenditure met by the employer on behalf of employee not forming part of salary.

The appropriate provision under section 10 can be selected from the drop-down . In case exemption is claimed under multiple heads under this section, like HRA, conveyance, etc ,more line items can be added.

Finally, the total of all amounts entered should match to the amount of variance indicated in the notice and unexplained variance displayed in point 7 of Dynamic Reconciliation statement at the bottom of the table should be zero

Once finished, the table looks something like this:

Click on Submit to complete.

In the above table, if you agree with the demand raised, then the next step would be to revise the return of income.
