Customers of telecom service provider Aircel on Wednesday virtually laid siege to some of its outlets in Chennai after the rumours about the closure of its service emerged. A number of Aircel customers queued to apply for mobile number portability, which is also reported to have been impacted by the network issues. Apart from the Chennai circle, media reports say that the Aircel network is facing issues in Northeast including Assam where the telecom services are completely down.

An Aircel company official told PTI that the telecom operator has been facing issues and it is currently being resolved. “Aircel is facing network issues and we are trying to find a way to resolve this at the soonest possible,” the official told PTI.

After the Aircel services were disrupted, several customers took to Twitter to report the issue where they publicly hit out at Aircel for giving inconvenience to the customers. According to them, the users were not able to make or receive calls on the network. Some users related the network issue to the closure of the company, the rumours of which led many to switch to mobile number portability. However, due to the connectivity issues, the MNP facility laid defunct for the users.

When the agitated customers began creating ruckus at the company outlets, the Aircel employees tried to convince them by advising them to not pay attention to the rumours about the closure as these were being sparked by the incumbents. Aircel had joined hands with Reliance Communications last year where both the companies mutually agreed to merge the business after the fierce competition offered by Reliance Jio. However, the deal could not materialise and had a fallout.
