Six Sigma Methodology

Six Sigma Methodology

Six Sigma is an approach that seeks to improve quality of the processes or products by measuring the defects in a process and guides to eliminate them until there are as close to zero defects as possible.

We have discussed what six sigma is in detail in the previous article Six Sigma, you can refer to this article if you want detailed analysis of six sigma.

To summarize, Six sigma always considers the achievement of perfection operation and serve consumers with quality.

Six Sigma always demands the understanding every aspect of business process and products which will bring efficiency in its operation.

Achievement of six sigma drastically changes the way of business operation. And though achievement of six sigma is not that hard, it is not that easy as well.

The main focus area of six sigma is serving quality products to the customer as per their taste.

The main concept of six sigma is to get rid off any deviations that arise in the business processes and the product and services rendered by the entity..

It basically guides you to review your present business practice and know their impact on quality performance.

It strongly drives you towards the level of sustained quality improvement. For this, Organizations need to monitor their business processes closely to confirm that there almost no deviation from the mean and take corrective measures to achieve perfection.

For implementing six sigma there are two separate key methodologies for existing and new processes. Even though we shall discuss them separately, it is impertinent to know that conceptually there is some overlapping between the two.

The two methodologies are DMAIC and DMADV. Here we will discuss the DMAIC as:

DMAIC methodology is an acronym for five different steps used in six sigma. It enforce towards improvement of existing product, process or service. The five steps are as follows:

Define:

This is when you decide what you want from the implementation of six sigma. Here you should determine your expectation from the Six Sigma for process improvement which should consistent with the strategy of the organization and customer demands. So you need to consult with your experts what needs to be done.

Measure:

Once you decide your goals, the next step would be measure. As per this you have to measure existing processes that how much contribution can the existing processes are measured to facilitate future comparison. Six sigma experts collect process data by mapping and measuring relevant processes.

Analyze:

Organisation has to analyse the cause-effect relationship of processes factors and find the relationship between them. Strategic manager should conduct comprehensive analyses to identify hidden or not so obvious factor.

Improve:

On the basis of the analysis you as a experts have to make a detailed study of whole business process and make strategy for the improvement. Thus, you need to make the study of whole existing processes and products.

Control:

Now, it is a time to take Initial trial run in order to establish process capability and transition to production. Afterwards continuously measure the process to ensure that variances are identified and corrected before they result in defects.

These all are conducted in order to achieve the defects free process or products.
