A resident individual whose total income is less than Rs 5 lacs can claim the rebate.

Further, rebate under this section shall be the maximum of 5000.
It means that individual having income of Rs 5 lacs or less can claim lower of the followings.

a. Total income-tax liability or
b. Rs. 5,000.
