Value chain refers to separate activities which are necessary to underpin an organization's strategies and are linked together both inside and outside the organization. Organizations are much more than a random collection of machines, money and people. Value chain of a manufacturing organization comprises of primary and supportive activities.

The primary ones are inclusive of inbound logistics, operations, outbound logistics, marketing and sales, and services.

The supportive activities relate to procurement, human resource management, technology development and infrastructure.

Value chain analysis helps in maintaining the long-term competitive position of an organization to sustain value for-money in its products or service. It can be helpful in identifying those activities which the organization must undertake at a threshold level of competence and those which represent the core competences of the organization.
