The processor or CPU is like the brain of the computer that carries out the instructions of a computer program. It performs the basic arithmetical, logical, and input/output operations of a computer system.
The Central Processing Unit interprets and executes the program instructions and coordinates how all the other hardware devices work together.
The CPU is built on a small flake of silicon and can contain the equivalent of several million transistors. We can think of transistors as switches which could be “ON” or “OFF” i.e., taking a value of 1 or 0. The main function of CPU is to execute programs stored in memory. It consists of three functional units:
