The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) has deactivated 11.5 crore PAN cards for not being linked to Aadhaar cards by the deadline. The deadline for linking PAN with Aadhaar expired on June 30, and individuals who received PAN cards before July 1, 2017, were required to manually link them. The RTI reply to activist Chandra Shekhar Gaur revealed that out of 70.24 crore PAN card holders in India, 57.25 crore have linked their PAN cards to Aadhaar, while more than 12 crore PAN cards, of which 11.5 crore have been deactivated, have not been connected to Aadhaar.
According to the information provided, the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) revealed that 11.5 crore PAN cards were deactivated for not being linked to Aadhaar cards by the deadline. This was in response to a Right to Information (RTI) request.
The consequences of not linking PAN with Aadhaar include the deactivation of the PAN card, which can lead to difficulties in filing income tax returns and other financial transactions.
The information also mentions that the PAN card can be reactivated by paying a Rs 1,000 fine. However, there have been objections to this, with concerns raised about the high fine compared to the cost of obtaining a new PAN card.
The steps to check the status of PAN-Aadhaar linking are as follows:

3. Enter your 10-digit PAN number and 12-digit Aadhaar number.
4. Click on ‘View Link Aadhaar Status’.
5. If your Aadhaar number is already linked, it will be displayed. If not linked, you must take the necessary actions to link the two.
6. If your request to link PAN and Aadhaar is pending with UIDAI for validation, you will need to check the status later.
7. Contact the Jurisdictional AO to delink Aadhaar and PAN if your Aadhaar is linked with some other PAN or your PAN is linked with some other Aadhaar.
