If forced to consider fee reduction, reduce value first. Sometimes reduction of fees is a reasonable request. On those occasions, never reduce fees without making a commensurate decrease in value. For example - You can take out the international part of the study, or remove the post-survey discussions with management, or eliminate the written reports. Sometimes your client will say, “We can’t afford to lose that” and will concede the fee, but in any case, you don’t want to be seen as someone who has a padded fee awaiting reduction.
